Charles Krauthammer inveighs against the Hollywood-Oscar axis of liberal America-hating. I haven't seen any of the films he indicts in the article, but I did want to comment about how he highlights
this piece of over-the-top, Gordon Gekko Republican-speak, placed in the mouth of a Texas oilman: "Corruption is our protection. Corruption is what keeps us safe and warm. . . . Corruption . . . is how we win...."
Gordon Gekko, of course being the capitalist sleazebag from the Oliver Stone film Wall Street, famous for the "greed is good" speech--which monologue is, you know, so over-the-top.
Except that it quite fairly restates and expounds upon Ivan Boesky's sentiment that "Greed is healthy."
Which is to say that when it comes to lampooning the kind of politically modulated sociopathy exhibited by, say, Halliburton-style global anarchocapitalists (and papered over by hacks like Krauthammer), "over the top" is at best a hopeless aspiration.
UPDATE: Busy, Busy, Busy has your Shorter Charles Krauthammer.
